Goodreads Description:
"I noticed his eyes. They were blue, sharp and intense. Despite the youthful glows of his suntanned face, his eyes were cold and unfriendly, suggesting he had great experience in the world and was now expecting the worst.
In her seventeenth year, Princess Alera of Hytanica faces one duty: to marry the man who will be king. But her father's choice of suitor fills her with despair.
When the palace guard captures and intruder—a boy her age with steel-blue eyes, hailing from her kingdom's greatest enemy—Alera is alarmed…and intrigued. But she could not have guessed that their clandestine meetings would unveil the dark legacy shadowing both their lands.
In this mystical world of court conspiracies and blood magic, loyalties will be tested. Courage won't be enough. And as the battle begins for everything Alera holds dear, love may be the downfall of a kingdom."
Legacy was a slow
book for me in the beginning because of all of the character building, world
building, and plot set-up. I consider this a necessary evil in most high
fantasy novels, and Cayla Kluver’s debut novel proved to be worth the less-than
riveting beginning. The two things that drew me into Legacy were the romance and character building.
Likeable, three-dimensional characters are essential to a good
book. Without them, we don’t enjoy the story because it becomes difficult to
connect with the characters (and therefore the story). Alera, proved to be a
likeable main character, albeit naïve. What made me respect her was her
constant struggle to be taken seriously in a chauvinistic society and her
desire for freedom. As the crown princess of Hytanica, Alera knows her duty is
to marry a man that is suitable to rule the kingdom. While she wishes to marry
for love and find a husband who views her as more than a pretty face, there are
a great deal of obstacles she will have to overcome if she is ever to achieve
her goals.
Alera has been commanded to find a husband in only a few
months, and her father has the perfect choice in mind—Steldor, the captain of
the guard’s son. Too bad Alera can’t stand him. Personally, I don’t think Steldor
is as bad as Alera thinks he is—which is another commendation to Kluver’s character
development skills. Fortunatley, Alera’s
aversion to Steldor creates a wonderful love triangle. The love triangle was
definitely the best part of the story for me, and I’m really anxious to see how
everything plays out in the rest of the series.
Legacy is ideal
for fans of love triangles and stories that are driven by character
development. It is pretty light on action
and adventure, but the attachments that you form to the characters and the
unexpected ending will leave you wanting more.
All in all, Legacy was a solid
novel and I’m looking forward to more stories from Cayla Kluver.
