Fathomless is a re-imagining of The Little Mermaid, but aside from the ocean the two stories have very little in common (well, at least with the happy Disney version that I am familiar with). The story is told from 3 perspectives: Lo (the mermaid), Naida (former human turned mermaid/the other half of Lo), and Celia (human born with powers). Having the novel told from three perspectives really added to the plot and let us experience a lot more of the story.
Something terrible happened to Naida that caused her to become Lo--now the two more or less share a body and Celia does her best to help them. This sounds a little confusing, but is surprisingly easy to follow.
The focus of the novel really centers around what happened to Naida. SInce Naida has very few memories of her past, watching her struggle with herself is fascinating. I have always loved novels about memory and mental stability--they are just fascinating to me, so I really loved this about Fathomless.
