1. Steldor (charming, swoon worthy love interest)
I didn’t realize until I started reading Allegiance (book #2) how much I loved Steldor. He is just such an awesome character to read about and he’s my first book crush! He’s smart, funny, charming, and a brilliant leader. He also has a great sense of style and would do anything to make Alera happy. I think that Steldor will be successful at whatever he does and I am sincerely hoping that there will one day be a Steldor spin off.
The majority of the Legacy trilogy takes place in Hytanica, where women are thought to be inferior and should be seen not heard. It is not uncommon for men to physically discipline their wives, and they really have no place outside of the home.
Given the type of society we are dealing with, Alera is a breath of fresh air. She is smart, loyal, dedicated, and passionate. She loves her people and she is determined to lead them, even though Hytanica has always been governed by a man. Alera blatantly defies societal conventions and refuses to sit passively by when she knows she can help the country. It takes a lot of courage to be that strong in such a repressive society.
The world Cayla Kluver has created is so cool! There is magic and legends and a very long, bloody history (at least in the case of Hytanica). Learning about the completely different culturers was also fascinating, and Kluver managed to blend them together perfectly.
There are so many novels that deal with patriarchal societies. It is not uncommon to pick up a novel featuring a kick ass heroine in a world where she is supposed to be a home maker. I can’t think of a single novel, however, where an author deals with a matriarchal society with the exception of the Legacy trilogy. Aside from adding an additional layer of complexity to the story, exploring different cultures allows Cayla Kluver to show that men and women are truly equal.
There are so many intricate political games going on in Legacy and I just couldn’t get enough of them. There aren’t any petty court games in Legacy—all of the strategizing and planning that goes on effects the futures of millions of citizens. This is done particular well in Sacrifice where the mastermind plotting is worthy of an Ocean’s 11 style heist.

This is not the time for the fight to end. Now is when the fight will begin. This is the time to regain what has been lost.
This is a story told by two:
ALERA - Queen of a fallen kingdom, secretly in love with the enemy.
SHASELLE - Daughter of a murdered father, rebel with a cause.
One was ruler Hytanica, but now walks the razor’s edge to keep the fragile peace in her beloved homeland.
The other slips through the war-torn streets, seeking retribution for her family’s tragedy, following whispers of insurgency.
Both face choices that will separate them from those they cannot help but love. As their stories intertwine, a conspiracy ignites that may end in slavery or death—or lead to freedom anew, if only each can face what must be sacrificed. Told in part from within the castle by Alera and in part outside the walls by a new character, Shaselle, SACRIFICE showcases the final epic battle for love and freedom.

With the book industry currently in a debate over print vs. digital, Cayla Kluver, born October 2, 1992 in Wisconsin, truly embodies the next generation of author. At just 19 years-old, Cayla has already published her debut novel Legacy in three different formats.
It all began with self-publication and the creation of her own publishing house (with the help of her mom, called: Forsooth Publishing) in 2008. Cayla was then offered a digital debut with Amazon (was the premier title for Amazon’s self-publishing program, Amazon Encore) in 2009. Finally in 2010 Cayla was signed to a three book publishing deal with Harlequin TEEN.
She has cats, dogs and horses, and watches more crime shows than is probably healthy. Her office is filled with twinkly lights, candles and fun colors. She loves Robert Louis Stevenson and the Beatles, and you can follow her on Twitter @CaylaKL, as well as join her fan page on Facebook.
